Harvesting a Garden the Right Way

Have you ever looked at others gardens and often wanted the same thing for yourself? Well you will be pleased to learn that you can definitely create your very own garden by learning the right way of harvesting.

Harvesting the right way is how you continue to have seeds for the next year, and then the following year you will harvest to make sure you have seeds for the next and so forth.

  • harvesting garden vegetablesPerhaps you have always wondered how to harvest, but it is actually very easy, what you will need is time because it can be time-consuming, especially in the beginning.
  • You will also need a pair of good scissors, paper bags or envelopes, and you can also use some tweezers though these are not always needed.
  • The best time to begin your harvesting is right after the dew on the vegetation has dried, which is typically the middle part of the morning or the early part of the afternoon.
  • Keep in mind that some plants do make very small seeds, so it may be difficult to see them, you can use a strainer (stainless steel works best), and to crush the seed pods and then you can just shake the strainer with a paper bag or envelope under it to collect the seeds.
  • harvesting an organic gardenThe strainer also will keep other undesirables out of your seed collection such as dirt and weeds. If the seeds are difficult to remove, then you might need to actually remove them with the tweezers, which of course can be very time consuming.
  • When harvesting, if you have several different plants, make sure you keep the seeds separate by marketing on the bags what seeds belong to which plant, you do not want to get them mixed or you may end up with funny looking garden.
  • Once you have the seeds you need, then you need to use the envelopes or something small like this so that you can store them, so make sure you have readable labels on your envelopes.
  • Seal the envelopes and then place them in an area where the seeds will not become too dry, for instance, make sure they are in an area that receives adequate ventilation.

You are Now Ready for the Next Planting Season

Harvesting your seeds may seem time-consuming but once you do it a couple of times and get a system down, many people enjoy this process.

It keeps the cycle of the life of the vegetation continuing and for many people this is an exciting part of the gardening process.

The main thing to remember is to stay organized with your seeds and don’t get them mixed because many seeds look same and is therefore, hard to tell them apart.
