However I have had problems in the past with harvesting my sunflower seeds.

  • I live in a very hot and humid climate, so mold is a definite problem.
  • Birds and other animals also love to eat up my seeds before I can harvest them.
  • If either of these problems has hampered your seed production, just keep reading.

Sunflower seeds should be allowed to dry on the head. That means you don’t mess with the flower, when it starts drooping. If the head drops too far you can prop it up, but for the most part just leave the plant alone.

  • To prevent animals and insects from your sunflower seeds, and to help catch any seeds that might fall out, tie cheese cloth or a paper bag around the head of your sunflower.
  • Keep it on with a rubber band or piece of string.

Typically, these seeds are not very difficult to grow, harvest, and maintain, most beginner’s should be able to successfully grow this crop.

If you live in a humid area, like I do, it might be best to cut off the head of the sunflower, leaving about a foot of stalk attached, and dry it in a covered, warm environment.

The garage or a garden shed is a great place to store the heads, until the seeds are completely dry. Hang the heads upside down, with the bag or cloth still around them.

When the seeds are completely dry just leave the bag or cloth on and gently brush off the seeds.

  • If they give you any trouble then they are not dry enough to be harvested yet.
  • The seeds should easily brush off.
